Now that we’ve established that waxing is the smarter choice, we want to make sure you use your common sense when it comes to waxing. There are things you may not have thought about when booking your very first waxing appointment, but once you hear them you will smack yourself on the head and say, “Duh, that’s just common sense.”
Of course, we’re big advocates of waxing vs. shaving. We discussed why waxing is the smart choice in our recent blog post, “Smart is Cool. That’s Why You Should Wax.” If you didn’t read it we’ll give you some hints: avoid the risk of being nicked or cut by your razor; avoid the notorious “5 o’clock shadow,” and the added benefit of exfoliation. Ladies, consider this: It you wax ‘down there’, wouldn’t it be nice to stop attempting to maneuver a razor down there every couple of days and, instead, deal with one 30-minute session of minor pain followed by 3-5 hairless weeks.
Waxing. A Common Sense Approach.
You Don’t Have To Feel Weird About Being Undressed In Front Of Your Esthetician
It’s okay to feel a little weird about basically getting naked and showing the most private part of yourself to a stranger… but when you think about it, it’s just like going to a gynecologist or doctor. They are used to it. They have done it a thousand times. They will not give it a second thought. It’s the same with us. We’re all women and we do Brazilian waxes all day, every day. And unlike a doctor who just gives you a thin hospital gown, you’ll get a luxurious bath towel to make you feel less “exposed.”
You Can’t Shave For At Least 1-2 Weeks Before Waxing
This may seem like a challenge to some of you, but one crucial thing about waxing is you must let the hair grow in. If you don’t, the wax has nothing to grab onto and it’s not going to work. Our estheticians recommend hair should be about a quarter inch, or as we like to explain it, the length of a grain of rice.
Don’t Expose The Waxed Area To Friction For 24 Hours
If you’re planning on surprising your man with a steamy sexy session after your wax, please don’t. You should avoid friction in the waxed area for 24 hours. Friction can lead to irritation. So, if you’re planning a romantic evening or you have a Pilates class that you just can’t miss, make sure you get waxed at least a day or two before.
Talking With Your Esthetician Keeps Things From Being Awkward
Talking to your esthetician makes things feel a little more comfortable. We start every waxing service with first-time clients with an initial consultation to explain what and why we do what we do. Our estheticians are all super friendly, very open and love to talk to clients. They’ll answer any skincare and post-wax after care questions you may have. Still nervous? We offer champagne and mini Coronas for those of you who partake in the occasional alcoholic beverage to help take the edge off.
Wear Sweats Or Other Comfy Clothes
We suggest wearing cotton undies and loose sweats to your first waxing appointment–even if you are planning on running errands afterwards. Especially with a Brazilian wax, the waxed area may be somewhat tender and pairing that with tight jeans and a lacy thong can feel less than amazing. Everyone is different: some women get waxed on their lunch break, then head straight back to work in their heels and skirts, while others throw on their sweats and take a few hours off from looking polished until the area is no longer sensitive. As you become used to waxing, you will develop a routine that works for you.
Use A Professional Esthetician
We can’t tell you how many clients come to get waxed thinking that it is going to be a horrible experience. A lot of nail salons offer eyebrow waxing, and a lot of high volume waxing places offer the 10-minute Brazilian. Please do not go to one of these places. Instead, opt for a salon that specializes in waxing because they will use a high-end wax; will pre-treat your skin for better, less painful results; and will give you instructions on how to best care for your skin post wax. Professional estheticians are familiar with hair growth cycles and products for preventing ingrown hairs or other side effects from waxing.
Don’t stress! It’s Not As Painful As You Think.
Your esthetician will apply warm wax to your skin. Honestly, many of our clients think it feels warm and soothing. When the wax is removed, it does sting for a moment or two. But remember: the more you wax, the less it hurts. Eventually the root stops growing in and there isn’t as much hair to pull out. So keep waxing on a regular basis and the pain will be kept to a minimum.
Now that you’ve heard these tips, they probably seem like common sense. But be honest, at least one of these things you probably didn’t know, right? You’re welcome. Now if you haven’t already, book an appointment with us here at Bare Elegance Waxing Salon by clicking here or calling 858-412-5392.
